Chemicals Needed
1. 99.5% Ethanol or I.P.A .......14.07litre
2. Distilled water .................5.71 litre
3. G.V(dye) .............very litle(not required in surgical methylated spirit
METHODOLOGY
To get the quantity of 98% ethanol or 99.5% ethanol that will be added Α̲̅πϑ the quantities of water to be added to dilute the ethanol to 70%
DESIRED CONCENTRATION:
Desired volume
Given concentration
To produce 20litres of methylated spirit (70% alcohol) using 98% ehtanol or 99.5% ethanol
70%/99.5% * 20=14.07litre
Or
70%/98.5% * 20 = 14.26litre
FOR 98% ethanol
*measure 14.26 litre of the ethanol inside a container
*measure out 5.07 litre of distilled water and
*dilute the ethanol with it
FOR 99.5% ethanol
*measure 14.07 litre of the ethanol inside a container
*measure out 5.07 litre of distilled water and
*dilute the ethanol with it.
NOTE: GV(dye) is usually added to methylated spirit to prevent being mistaken as water, so that somebody will not drink it, that is the reason why some methylated spirit are coloured.
